This year, NIBC celebrates its 80th anniversary. A moment to pause and reflect, not only on where they are now, but also on the path that brought them here. What began as the Maatschappij tot Financiering van Nationaal Herstel, created in the aftermath of World War II, has grown into a modern financial services provider that helps people and businesses realise their ambitions. We spoke with Yoeri van Wel and Floyd van den Berg from Corporate Communications about the bank’s history, its present-day values and its vision for the future.

A legacy that still inspires

When NIBC was founded in 1945, the mission was clear: to support the rebuilding of the Netherlands. That original purpose still echoes in everything the bank does today, whether through financing housing, supporting entrepreneurs or helping people make their homeownership dreams come true. Internally, that attitude is summed up in two simple words: Think Yes. A mindset focused on possibilities rather than obstacles. Combined with the core values of PACE – Professional, Adaptive, Collaborative and Entrepreneurial – it becomes clear how NIBC continues to chart its own course in the world of finance.

Milestones worth celebrating

The year 2025 is not only about looking back. It also marks a series of other milestones across the organisation. The Real Estate Finance team celebrates its tenth anniversary. Lot Hypotheken, a subsidiary of NIBC, turns five. And in London, the team will mark thirty years of activity in the UK.

But the bank’s impact goes far beyond numbers and achievements. Social responsibility is an integral part of NIBC’s identity. A good example is the initiative “Het Jassenhuisje”, organised in collaboration with SchuldHulpMaatje. Together with fellow tenants of The Zone, winter coats were collected and distributed to people in The Hague who needed extra warmth during the colder months. “It helps that we have so many great neighbours here,” says Yoeri. “When you work together, you can really make a difference.”

That sense of social awareness is just as present inside the organisation. In May, NIBC hosted Freedom May, a month filled with events and conversations about the importance of freedom. “Given our history, freedom has always been a theme close to NIBC’s heart,” explains Floyd.

From office building to shared space: The Zone

NIBC’s perspective reaches beyond the walls of the bank. When their office at Carnegieplein became too large, NIBC created something new: The Zone. A vibrant, collaborative workspace that brings together a variety of businesses. It is a place that encourages new ideas, connections and community spirit.

A future built on ambition

Even as the bank celebrates eight decades of history, NIBC remains focused on the road ahead. An open culture, a personal approach and a strong belief in working together form the foundation for what comes next. Whether it is with clients, colleagues or neighbours, helping people achieve their goals remains the guiding principle. The key question stays the same: how can we move forward together?
